IoT SIM data usage calculator
Estimate how much cellular data one IoT device uses per month from the bytes it exchanges per reporting cycle, how often it reports and any firmware downloads. Use measured values from a pilot where you have them; the result is an estimate, not a plan recommendation.

How the estimate is calculated
Routine MB = bytes per cycle × (1,440 ÷ interval in minutes) × active days ÷ 1,000,000. Update MB = update size × download attempts. Total = routine + update, multiplied by the number of devices for the fleet figure. MB here means 1,000,000 bytes; confirm the unit and rounding your plan uses.
Worked examples
| Scenario | Assumption | Monthly estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Payload only | 200 bytes per report | 1.728 MB |
| Routine cycle | 600 bytes per cycle including routine exchanges (assumed, replace with your measurement) | 5.184 MB |
| Update month | Routine cycle plus one 20 MB update | 25.184 MB |
| Failed update retried | Routine cycle plus the 20 MB file downloaded twice | 45.184 MB |
These figures are arithmetic illustrations, not field measurements or Quanqiu IoT plan rates. Transport overhead, reconnects and diagnostics depend on the device and network.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does an IoT device use per month?
It depends on the bytes exchanged per reporting cycle and how often the device reports. For example, a 200-byte payload sent every five minutes for 30 days is 1.728 MB of payload alone; measure a full cycle on your device before choosing an allowance.
Why not add a fixed overhead percentage?
Protocol headers, acknowledgements, keep-alive messages, reconnects and retries vary by device, firmware and network. Measure a representative cycle on the usage counter that will be billed instead of applying a universal percentage.
Does the result tell me which plan to buy?
No. Compare the estimate, the update month and the highest observed pilot case with the allowance, validity and units confirmed in a written quote, and keep a reserve based on observed variability.
